Beginner-Novice

Hey there beginners/novices,

Want to dance cool and Fancy Moves – DON’T 🙂

Most people when starting dancing want to go and dance the fancy and cool moves that they see more experienced dancers dancing. I was the same too. However, what they don’t realize is that to be able to perform those moves and make them look cool and effortless they must have a better understanding of the characterization of the dance and a good knowledge of the basics. I am sure that for the people going through their first steps in dancing what I am saying now does not make sense but I promise you that it will all make sense to you soon.

Where to start

To learn to dance Latin, a good point to start is from the basic figures of the dances (as you know there are 5 Latin American dances, cha cha, samba, rumba, paso doble, and jive). There are two courses available that will help you with this. My preference is the Dancing Basics with Passion Series which you can access here. However, as you can see I have found FREE available online only the cha cha, rumba, and paso doble. If you are interested in buying this course have a look here.

Alternatively there is another FREE available online complete series that can do the job for you. This is the New ABC’s of Latin which you can access here.

Body Flexibility and Body Control

One thing that you will come to realize is the importance of body flexibility and body control in the execution of different Latin figures. It is good to start developing this as it can dramatically assist in your learning path and it is extremely important for you in order to become a successful dancer. To enhance your flexibility and body control you can do some body isolation exercises. You can do them either as a warm up exercise every time before you dance or basically anywhere, at home, in class, while waiting for the bus :D. Jaana Kunits demonstrates here some very good isolation exercises. Although it is advertised as ladies Latin styling series I can assure you that these are very good isolation exercises for both male and female dancers.

Something Cool – A body wave

So how would you like to learn how to do a body wave? I know I said no cool things for now, and to concentrate on the basics but If you have come so far and mastered body flexibility and body control I think you deserve this. It does need practice to perfect but you should be able to do it. Check out these body wave tutorials.

Summary

If you are a beginner/novice Latin dancer I suggest you bookmark this page so you can come back and go again and again through these courses. Remember: Repetition is the mother of skill! If you have successfully come to the end of dancing as a beginner/novice and have acquired all the necessary skills then Congratulations you can now move to the Intermediate level.
